BRUXISM - JAW CLENCHING

Anne McBride from Redland Reflexology, as a facial reflexology specialist, has had considerable success treating bruxism with her GW Facial Therapy treatments. The Bruxism treatment is included in the Japanese facial rejuvenation treatment.

Bruxism is a medical condition characterized by the grinding or clenching of teeth. It can occur during sleep (sleep bruxism) or wakefulness (awake bruxism). The cause of bruxism is not clearly understood, but it can be attributed to physical, psychological, and genetic factors.

Here are some recent findings and information about Bruxism:

  1. Symptoms: Symptoms include teeth grinding or clenching, flattened, fractured, chipped or loose teeth, worn tooth enamel, tooth pain and sensitivity, tight jaw muscles, difficulty opening the mouth, pain in the jaw, neck or face, pain that presents like an earache, sleep disruption, and headache.

  2. Diagnosis: Diagnosis is often delayed because bruxism commonly occurs during sleep and the affected individual could be unaware. It can be diagnosed through a dental examination, X-ray, and sleep studies.

  3. Treatment: Treatment options include professional facial reflexology, dental approaches, therapies, and medications. Medications for Bruxism include Cyclobenzaprine (Muscle relaxants) and Botox (Neurotoxins).

  4. Prevention: Practice stress-relieving techniques, avoid caffeinated drinks or alcohol in the evening and practice good sleeping habits. Regular facial reflexology for reducing stress and relaxing the facial muscles will be beneficial.

Please note that reflexology should be used as a complementary therapy and not as a replacement for dental/medical treatment.
